Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of materials that included no new data.
