The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
